2012 Cooper Hewitt National Design Awards
The 2012 Cooper Hewitt National Design Awards have been announced. Michelle Berryman juried the awards in March. The National Design Awards were conceived by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum to honor lasting achievement in American design. The Awards are bestowed in recognition of excellence, innovation, and enhancement of the quality of life. Meet the 2012 Winners.
Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt Museum’s National Design Awards Program
Michelle Berryman has been invited to serve as a juror for the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt Museum’s National Design Awards Program, March 12–13, 2012. The National Design Awards were conceived in 1997 by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum to honor lasting achievement in American design. The Awards are bestowed in recognition of excellence, innovation, and enhancement of the quality of life. First launched at the White House in 2000 as an official project of the White House Millennium Council, the annual Awards program celebrates design in various disciplines as a vital humanistic tool in shaping the world, and seeks to increase national awareness of the impact of design through education initiatives. IDEA 2011
Earlier this month, Michelle Berryman was honored to participate on the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA®) jury at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. Started in 1980 by The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), IDEA® fosters business and public understanding about the impact of design excellence on quality of life and the economy. While the IDEA® program is considered the preeminent design competition in the United States, its scope and influence reach far beyond U.S. boundaries.
This year’s internationally diverse jury of 15 men and 5 women, chaired by Davin Stowell, Founder and CEO of Smart Design, reviewed over 1,900 entries in 17 categories. Michelle juried entries in packaging and student work.
Winners will be announced soon and will be honored at this year’s IDSA international conference in September in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Design Turkey 2010 – Industrial Design Awards
In December 2010, Michelle Berryman participated as a juror for the Design Turkey Industrial Design Awards in Istanbul, Turkey. The awards program is a design evaluation system organized with the collaboration of the Turkish Undersecretariate for Foreign Trade (DTM), the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM) and the Industrial Designers Society of Turkey (ETMK), within the framework of the TURQUALITY® program. The program emphasizes the benefits good design brings to both society and industry in Turkey by rewarding design excellence that respects user needs and provides value and competitive advantage in the marketplace.
MOB Design Conference
In August 2010, Michelle Berryman participated in the 2nd International Conference MOB Design — Mobilization Object Brazil — promoted by Objeto Brasil, with the support of APEX-Brazil, at the Teatro Frei Mug, in Sao Paulo. The conference addressed the design of a new point of view: the intangible, with presentations on trends, inspiration, transcendence, design by gender, sustainability and creative city programs. Michelle also participated in the idea/Brazil awards program during her visit.
IDEA 2010
On February 9, Fast Company magazine announced the jury selection for the 2010 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA®). The internationally diverse jury of 10 men and 8 women, chaired by John Barratt, president and CEO of Teague, will include Michelle Berryman of EchoViz. Sponsored by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), the IDEA® program is the premier international competition honoring design excellence in products, ecodesign, interaction design, packaging, strategy, research and concepts. Michelle will be judging entries in the categories for environments and interactive product experiences. Judging will take place in April at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, with winners announced in the July/August issue of Fast Company magazine. Winners will be honored at this year’s IDSA international conference, held from August 5 to 7 in Portland, Oregon.
Australian International Design Awards Yearbook
Principal Michelle Berryman participated on the jury for the Australian International Design Awards, highlighting the outstanding work of Australian designers and products available in the Australian market. The results of this year’s awards can be seen in the Australian Design Awards Yearbook, which is now online, and can be viewed here.
Horizon Interactive Award
Echo Visualization wins again! Echo has won another Horizon Interactive award. This time the award is for the Cooper Lighting McGraw-Edison Talon Fixture Configurator in the Business to Business category. The award is for outstanding achievement among interactive media producers.
Housewares Design Awards Jury
Michelle Berryman of EchoViz has been selected as a juror for the fourth annual Housewares Design Awards, to be held on November 14-16. Michelle will be one of 12 jurors for the event. The Housewares Design Awards recognizes design’s critical importance in the housewares industry. Submissions in 13 product categories will be evaluated, and five finalists per category will be chosen. The finalists will be notified in November and invited to the Awards Luncheon to be held on January 16, 2007 in New York City. At that event, the Best-in-Category selections will be announced.
Cooper Lighting Wins ‘Best in Show’
Echo Visualization and Cooper Lighting received ‘Best in Show’ honors for booths 600 square feet and above at Lightfair 2006 in Las Vegas, by unanimous vote of the judges for the design of the Cooper Lighting exhibit. This is the first time that Cooper Lighting has ever garnered ‘Best in Show’ honors at Lightfair. Various defining factors, including effective branding, product presentation and unique use of design elements were utilized. The winners were selected by an independent panel of judges who bring decades of visual display expertise to the program.
The EchoViz team was also responsible for the interface design of the exhibit’s wireless lighting control system, multimedia plasma screen presentations, Energy Solutions Calculator demonstration and the on-site Internet-based ‘Voice of the Customer’ surveys. As part of the Lightfair rollout, EchoViz also assisted in updating the Lumiere, Corelite, Farallon and Healthcare brand websites for Cooper Lighting as well.
Lightfair is the world’s largest and most comprehensive annual architectural and commercial lighting conference. It is sponsored by the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA).
